The second book by the author of Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight. This book is not so much about her as it is about K, a man she meets on her parents' banana and fish farm in Zambia. K is a born-again Christian, an intense and violent (white) man who was a soldier on the losing side of the Rhodesian war and is haunted by demons. If you think he's odd, just wait until you meet his friend Mapenga, who lives on an island with a pet lion, or the soldier-of-fortune who drinks himself into oblivion every night and screams in his sleep.
I think this book did not get as good reviews as her first, but I like Fuller's spare style and the way she works in slang from a dozen different languages in a realistic way. I admire her willingness to confront her own sins and weaknesses without feeling sorry for herself, and her honesty about her motivations in befriending and traveling with K.
