Colapinto resists the temptation to sensationalize the story of David Reimer, who was born a boy (one of a pair of twins), lost his penis in a terrible hospital accident, and was raised as a girl until he was 14, even undergoing castration, surgical construction of a vagina, and estrogen treatments. The fascinating and heartbreaking story of his childhood is made bearable by the knowledge that David Reimer is now a happily married man with three children.
