The Ice Storm (Rick Moody)
September 20, 2002

I finished this book in the afternoon and watched the Ang Lee movie for the first time that night. In such close succession, I was hyperaware of the way the movie followed the same high-level structure as the book, but omitted and shifted lower level details. For instance, some events that are flashbacks in the book (the encounter between Sandy and Wendy in the bathroom) become part of the immediate story in the movie; details from the narrative are visually highlighted (Wendy's rainbow toe-socks). Some of the scenes were funnier in the movie than in the book (Elena stalking into the Halford's party for the second time and tossing the keys fiercely into the bowl) The mood and internal dialogue (Ben carrying Wendy home, Mike on the icy road) is suggested nonverbally (and beautifully) by the actors and the cinematographer. It was like a one-day lesson in how to make a successful screenplay from a successful novel.
