Life in Arlington
August 17, 2007

I am a wee bit behind on my contract work, so this will be quick. We've been Arlington residents for 17 days and so far I've taken advantage of the following services and businesses:

  1. Animal Welfare. On an evening stroll, baby and I came across an injured mourning dove. It hobbled across the street to the gutter where it sat trembling. I called 411, got through to Animal Welfare ("If this is an animal emergency, stay on the line!") and 15 minutes later a county employee pulled up in a white van with a flashing red light. She caught the dove in a dishtowel. It is probably rehabilitating as we speak at a local wildlife rehabilitation center.
  2. Columbia Pike Library. The physical plant is a bit dingy / dumpy, but the staff are very friendly and they seem to be well-stocked ... I got my card, but have not checked anything out yet. Good news: I can put books on hold online!
  3. Thomas Jefferson Community Center. It has an indoor track, tons of exercise machines, and lots of weights, and it costs $145 per year for residents. They have drop-in classes for an extra fee: $3. We live within walking distance of this place. We can't join until Monday, though, because it also hosts the Arlington County Fair this weekend. Woohoo! I love me a county fair.
  4. Target Greatland. What makes a Target "Greatland" different from all other Targets? I spent an hour and a half (and an arm and a leg) there, and I still have no idea.
  5. Ravi Kabob takeout. Best Tandoori chicken ever, and I don't even like Tandoori chicken.

Back to work. More later.

You're making me homesick...and the dove rescue reminds me of a funny short story I read a few months ago, only the main character calls 911 to report a bird fight in a park. Hilarity ensues!

I'm not sure I ever visited the Columbia Pike library. Quincy St. was the place for me, long before it turned into the palace it is today.

You should also try the Delhi Dhaba. It's between the Clarendon and Courthouse metro stops, off of either Wilson or Clarendon Blvd. There are a few tables (very casual) and you can also take-out. Good Bollywood movies playing all the time, too. The kids and I head into Arlington every now and then to go to the Dhaba.
