Purple America

I've been saying since the election that this whole "Red State-Blue State" talk is very misleading, because I remembered seeing a map after the 2000 election showing vote distribution at the county level. Robert J. Vanderbei of Princeton University made that map, and he's done it again:

It paints a much more precise -- and therefore much more nuanced and interesting -- picture.
Also, Sour Bob offers Some Thoughts on Red States & Blue States from a Southerner.
I saw that map, too, not long after the election. It is a good representation.
I'm quite sure that it you had a map of the US by average education level, with blue being more educated, you would have a very similar coloring. That's not a coincidence.
I must say that's quite a self-righteous attitude to take, but it seems quite rampant among those who vote blue.
What gives?
With comments like that from people, why is it a surprise that there's such a divide?
