two stories for Tuesday
May 14, 2002

One: My roommate's sister and her friend were driving to Costa Rica. They stayed with us one night on their way, and the the friend called her mother, who was obviously distressed about her daughter's choice of vacation plans: "We'll be fine, Mom. I swear." [pause] "Mother, don't worry, we'll be fine!" [longer pause] "Mother, we'll be fine! The revolution is over!"

Two: Two women friends were driving across rural Texas at high speed in a black Toyota Celica smothered inside and out with bumper stickers proclaiming support for progressive causes. Two local police officers clocked them on the radar and pulled them over. One approached the vehicle as the driver rolled down the window. He leaned down, unsmiling, and read aloud from a sticker on the dashboard in his native drawl: "Support your local feminist." He turned to his buddy: "I don't think we have one of those, do we?"
