Yes, at first I scoffed at the WUSA yearbook's Freedom section, where 3 out of 5 photos are of Mia. But then She came on the field in the second half, and I was a convert, as thrilled as the 8-year-old girls slapping their Cheersticks® together who, with their moms and dads, filled the lower sections of RFK stadium, chanting "Mi-A! Mi-A!"
She's a star. Anyone can see it. Cliched ways to describe how far above her teammates she plays come to mind: head and shoulders, a league. Time slowed down in the moments before she scored; easily, carefully she contemplated her shot, repositioned herself as everyone else on the field flailed around her gracelessly. She shoots, she scores. Mi-A!
