The Fast Runner (Atanarjuat): A This 3-hour Inuit saga is a great antidote to the summer fluff. The story, based on a folktale, involves several generations of Inuits but focuses on Atanarjuat, his wife Atuat, and his rival Oki. See it in the theater, on as big a screen as possible, so you fall into the brutal, barren landscapes. (Just don't see it at Visions, where they play the lobby music so loudly that you can hear it in the rear of the theater during those long Arctic silences.) Don't worry if you can't keep up with the plot at the beginning; once the stage is set the story unfolds at a more natural pace. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery and the very spare but memorable music.
