Dear Verizon
November 25, 2002

At first I was sad about spending today, my 30th birthday, without my boyfriend. But then you came along with the best birthday surprise ever and cheered me up so much!!!

Of course, I knew something was up, because you had to come up with a ruse to make sure I'd be home. You told me you'd come over between 8 and 12. That's a big window of time, so I spent the morning in a delicious state of uncertainty, not knowing when exactly you'd show.

When you hadn't come by 11:30, I called to make sure you were really coming. Man, you're good! You didn't let on at all. You just said a technician was dispatched, but, you claimed, you didn't know where he was or when he'd get here. Playing like you didn't know anything.

Now it's almost 1:00, and I still don't know when -- or even if! -- you are coming. Just think, if you'd come when you said you would, I would have gone out and walked around in the beautiful sunshine, and taken care of the other things I wanted to do today, and maybe had time for something fun. An ordinary day. But instead, I get to spend the day powerless, trapped in my apartment, afraid to call anyone in case you try to call me. Sometimes I even think -- and this would be the craziest surprise of all -- maybe you won't show at all, and I'll get to take another day off work!

Tell me -- are you doing this fabulous surprise just because it's my birthday, or do you treat everyone this well, every day?

Love,
Robin
