shenandoah national parkThis summer we've taken several day trips to Shenandoah, picking hikes from our PATC guidebook. hazel mountain, octoberA 6-mile circuit, up Pine Hill Trail and Hazel Mountain Trail, then down Sam's Run (briefly) and Broad Hollow.
old rag, septemberOld Rag is a 7-mile circuit with a difficult rock scramble at the summit.
sugarloaf circuit, juneWe did the 9-mile Sugarloaf circuit (#3 in your Potomac Appalachian Trail Club guide). We started on the AT near milepost 21 and Hogback Overlook; from there we took the Sugarloaf Trail, Keyser Run fire road, Pole Bridge Link Trail, and Piney Branch Trail. We saw ferns; mountain laurel, just past peak; Hogback Crest; "ghost trees" that were probably killed in the latest forest fire; and a radio tower. Twice we saw bear scat on the trail but -- unlike last time -- we saw no bears.
